He was predeceased by: his parents, Lewis L. "Dietch" Smith and Dorothy J. Personett Smith; his granddaughter Mechelle Swain; his son-in-law Craig McKay; his siblings, Johnny Smith, Lawrence "Tug" Smith and Dora Lee Dolbeare; and his siblings-in-law, Everette Dolbeare, Roland Sittermann, Mary Howard and Sonny Joe Howard.

He is survived by: his wife Edna Kathryn Howard of New Canton, IL; his children, Timothy Lowell Smith (Cathy) of New Canton, IL, Tonia McKay (Earl Mast) of Liberty, IL and Sue Smith (Danny) of Roodhouse, IL; his grandchildren, James McKay (Bobbie), Amanda Jane Smith (Paul Kurtz), Brady Smith (Megan) and Shawn Smith (Grace); his great grandchildren, Lyla McKay, Logan McKay, Timothy C. Smith, Stevie Kurtz, Wesley Smith, Sawyer Smith and Mark Smith; his sister Helen Sittermann of Quincy; and his brother-in-law John Howard (Connie) of Excelsior Springs, MO..
