He was predeceased by: his father William James; his children, Christopher John Hercules, Justin, Jason Hercules and Michelle Lynn Shafer; and his siblings, Charles Cessna, Justin Dale Cessna, Sandra Elder, June Kay Smith and Richard Hercules.

He is survived by: his spouse Dee Ann Hercules (Phifer); his son Stephen Nicholas Hercules (Danielle) of Mount Vernon; his grandchildren, Treyton, Jordan and Kaylee; and his siblings, Edward Eugene Cessna of Texas, Beatrice Houck of Ohio, Phyllis Waldrop of Tennessee, Gus Hercules of Oklahoma, Isabelle Deatherage of Missouri, Mary Alice Hercules of Wisconsin and Courtney Hercules of Kansas. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.

Memorials may be made in John's honor to the National Kidney Foundation or Saint Jude Children's Research Hospital.
