He was predeceased by: his parents, John Patterson and Esther Patterson (Gutzler); his wife Velma Schultz; his daughter Debra L. Patterson; and his siblings, John, Robert, George, Charles, Joseph and Ruth.
He is survived by: his former wife Mary Thompson; his granddaughter Jenna Reynolds (Thomas) of Mt. Vernon, IL; and his great grandchildren, Elliette Reynolds and Everett Reynolds. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
Memorials may be made in Herbert's honor to Leukemia Foundation, Centralia Recreation Complex, or Centralia Historical Society and will be accepted at the funeral home in Centralia.
