He was predeceased by: his father Albert "Shorty" Smith; and his brother Paul Andrew Smith. He is survived by: his wife Clara Scheppel; his children, Susan Smith of Mount Vernon, Donna Beehn (Gary) of Mount Vernon, Elizabeth Trotter (Mike) of Mount Vernon, Michael Smith and Terri Coyle of Mount Vernon; his grandchildren, Andrew Smith (Sara), Daniel Beehn, Adam Beehn, Jessica Houchin, Michaela Helverson (Waylon) and Jaden Trotter; and his great grandchildren, Carter Smith, Wyatt Helverson, Maddox Helverson and MacKenzie Smith.
Memorials may be made in Bernard's honor to Carmi Baptist Children's Home.
