He was loved and cherished by many people including: his parents, Harold Shafer and Mabel Shafer (Gill); his wife Nova Shafer of Morton; his sons, Michael Shafer (Julie) of Morton, Richard Shafer (Linda) of Fort Collins, Colo and Larry Shafer of Morton; and his half-brother Glenn Shafer (Verna) of Onley, Ill.. He was also cherished by five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to the St. Jude Children's Research Hospital or a charity of the donor's choice.
