He was predeceased by: his wife Elaine T. Klimek-Messel; his parents, Walter Francis and Helen Agnes Messel; and his brothers, Walter "Bud" Messel and Jim "Gums" Messel.
He is survived by: his sons, Robert Messel (Andrea), Scott Messel (Lorraine) and Kevin Messel (Liz); his grandchildren, Jonathan, Kristen, James, Katelyn Bach, Alivia Phelps, Morgan Messel and Rachel Messel; and his sister Judy Dietz (Joe).
