He is survived by: his children, Joe Shafer of Galesburg, IL, Robert Shafer (Jeri) of Galesburg, IL, Michael, Jr. Shafer (Cindy) of Seaton, IL and Jennifer Mikulich (Keith) of Kansas City, MO; and his grandchildren, Brittany Shafer, Michael Shafer, Jr. (United States Army), Brooke Shafer, Ashlynn Shafer, Aaron Shafer, Kristin Mikulich and Joshua Mikulich.
