He was predeceased by: his parents, Hoyt Helms and Helen Helms (Bradford); his wife Mary Ann Miller; his children, Darren Smith and Tracy McDaniel; and his siblings, Gail Callow, George Helms, Barbara Wright and Reona Browning.
He is survived by: his children, Crystal Woodward (Shane Thomas) of Dixon and Jim Smith (Sherry) of Milledgeville; his grandchildren, Nicole, Dakota, Jade, Amanda, John, Braeden and Brandon; and his friend Ed Stage. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established to the Milledgeville Fire Department.
