He was predeceased by: his father Charles Whiteside; his grandparents, Mary Sparks, Alleen Sparks and Otis Sparks; and his son Eric Bray.
He is survived by: his mother Gladys M. Sparks; his significant other Pearlie "Tockie" Turnage; his children, Melvin Duncan (Gita Martin) and Lateshia Jackson; and his brother William Lovell Sparks. He is also survived by 18 grandchildren; 8 great grandchildren.
