He was predeceased by: his parents, Joseph J. Sr. Chernis and Esther Chernis (Hinz); and his sister Marilyn Duncan (Kirkland). He is survived by: his son Joey Chernis (Amy) of Sherman; his grandson Devin Chernis of Riverton; and his siblings, Cheryl Gibbons of Tellico Plains, TN and John Chernis of Sherman.
