He was loved and cherished by many people including: his parents, Claud Bates and Gurtha Bates (Mathews); his children, Howard Damon Bates, Nelson Bates, Edith Farris (late Weldon), Viola Taylor (Floyd) and Claudean Cox; his wife Nancy D. Oates; and his stepchildren, Pamela Rockey (Gary) of Woodstock, Kenneth Oates (Elisa) of Rockford, Dennis Oates (Caroline) of Poplar Grove, Rodney Oates (Elizabeth) of Marengo, Timothy Oates of Wisconsin Rapids, Wis and Bethany Vacala (Charles) of Chicago. He was also cherished by numerous step-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren; and a mutiple nieces and nephews.
