He was predeceased by: his parents, Robert Helfvogt and Delores Helfvogt (Grant); his son Gary Edward Helfvogt Sr.; and his nephew Douglas Wheeland. He is survived by: his close friend Joyce; his grandson Gary Edward Helfvogt Jr.; and his siblings, William Helfvogt (Terry), Dale Helfvogt (Christine), Christopher Helfvogt, Bonnie Zulhlke and Debbie Wheeland. He is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established in the family's name.
