He was predeceased by: his parents, Harry and Abigail; and his brother John Thanos. He is survived by: his wife Bernadine "Bernie" Steffen; his daughters, Lisa Thanos Harrod (Jason) of Manteno and Rebecca Thanos Benson (Eric) of Elmhurst; his brother Daniel Thanos (Rhonda) of Arizona; his grandchildren, Nathan Harrod, Connor Harrod, Karlie Harrod, Paul Benson, Peter Benson and Maggie Benson; and his sister-in-law Kathy Hincks of Chicago.

Memorials may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.

“Pete came into our lives when I was about 13 years old. He seemed bigger than life to a young girl. He quickly joined in the family fun in our household filled with teen-agers and young adults. He loved his sports and history and had a knack for weaving both topics into conversations. My parents, Bill and Eileen loved to watch him coach football games. I am forever thankful for the joy he brought to them. My friends enjoyed time with Pete, who will forever be remembered. God-Speed.”
