He was predeceased by: his parents, Floyd Phares and Lucille Phares; and his brother Jim. He is survived by: his former wife Janice Benson; his wife Karen Benson; his sons, Todd, Troy (Laura) and Trent (Lonnie); his grandchildren, Jacob, Connor, Gavin, Gabriel, Ava and Ella; and his sister Jeanne. He is also survived by several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation or the Golden K Kawanis Club.
