He was predeceased by: his parents, Orville Backens and Lucy Backens; his siblings, Larry Backens and Sherry Emenecker; and his nephew Kevin Heidt.
He is survived by: his wife Phyllis (Held); his children, Justin Backens (Shelley) of Rockford, IL and Teara Rhode (Jason) of Rockford, IL; his granddaughters, Seara, Madigan, Avalon, Lucy and Linnea; and his sisters, Peggy Bargren (Dave), Connie Rozier and Linda Lanferman (John). He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
Instead of flowers, memorials can be made to Spencer Lake Christian Center in Waupaca, WI.
