He was predeceased by: his parents, Leo Mertes and Mary Ellen Mertes (Weber); and his siblings, Allen Mertes and Sally Mertes. He is survived by: his wife Elsie Mertes; his children, Dennis Mertes (Grace) of Gardner, David Mertes (Debbie) of Henry, Karen Schmitt of Lostant, Susie Brandner (Kevin) of Lostant and Dan Mertes (Danell) of Lostant; and his siblings, Richard Mertes of Lostant and Joyce Heider (Alan) of Streator. He is also survived by 19 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren; 3 great-great grandchildren.
