He was loved and cherished by many people including: his parents, John Dale and Aletha Bradford Rankin; his wife Margaret; his grandfather William Bradford; his daughter Lisa Messer (Jimmy); his grandchildren, Emma and Corbin Messer; and his brother Brian Jones (Michelle) of Lomax.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established in his memory for the Henderson County Hospice.
