He was predeceased by: his parents, Otto Helgen and Hulda Helgen; his wife Sue; his grandson Keck Edward Hampton; and his brother Herman Helgen (Bud).

He is survived by: his children, Marci Johnson (Peanut), Nancy Flack (Earl), Dan Helgen (JoAnn) and Tricia Rogers (Craig); his grandchildren, Kyle Johnson (Angie), Kasey VanderMeersch (Tyler), Ryan Stitt (Brittany), Emily Stitt, Zachary Helgen, Amanda Hampton (Alex), Lindsay Epley (Cody), Rachel Helgen (Blake), Caitlan Rogers (Eric Maguire), Brianna Herschelman (Sam Taylor) and Alec Rogers (Dana Newell); his stepgranddaughter Kelsey Flack; his great grandchildren, Korbin Johnson, Kyra Halleman, Ariya, Axtyn VanderMeersch, Ruby, Millie Hampton, Scarlett, Harper Epley, Ellie, Leo, Bryce Maguire, Lucy Rogers and Everett Flack; and his siblings, Alice Alexander of Tacoma, Washington. and Bud (Herman).

The family respectfully requests in lieu of flowers, all memorials can be made to Zion Lutheran Church or Ed Helgen Ag Scholarship.
