He was predeceased by: his parents, Harry Hanson and Maria Hanson; and his brothers, Jack and Larry Hanson. He is survived by: his wife Joy; his children, Thomas (Nicole), Daniel and Jaclyn Allen (Heath); his grandchildren, Aubrey, John "Jack", Kayden, Julian Hanson and Parker Allen; his siblings, Beth Schilling (Nick) and Jean Middono (Bill); and his sister-in-law Rita Hanson.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Edward Hines, Jr. VA Hospital.
