He was predeceased by: his parents, Vernel and Marie Smith Sr. (Hanes); his stepfather Edward Jasper; and his brothers, Billy, Larry and Mark.
He is survived by: his wife Judith A. Phillips of Kilbourne; his children, Vernal "Vern" Smith III of Kilbourne and Shellie McGary (Keith) of Kilbourne; his grandchildren, Kati Todd (Ryan) and Dylan McGary (Abby Wetzel); and his siblings, Ira E. "Sonny" Smith of Springfield and Katherine Sue Engelbrecht of Kilbourne.
