He was predeceased by: his parents, Grover Laverne and Florene Thornton (Reed) of Herrin. He is survived by: his wife Charlene West; his children, Duane Thornton (Janet) and Sandy Stanley (Chris); his grandchildren, Josh Thornton (Kennadi), Brianna Thornton (Jeremiah), Kaci Thornton, Trevor Stanley, Darcey Stanley and Chase Stanley (Ashton); his cousin J. L. Thornton (Martha); his niece Darlene West; and his nephews, Mike West, Danny West (Sheryl), Andy West, Joe West and Tim West (Debbie).

Memorial contributions may be made to the Robert "Bob" Thornton Scholarship Fund at Johnston City High School.
