He was predeceased by: his parents, Robert C. Coates and Anna Brammeier Coates; and his brother-in-law Allen Prewitt. He is survived by: his siblings, Cynthia Prewitt of Jacksonville and Steven Coates (Kathy) of Jacksonville; his nieces, Cheri Orris (Matt), Ashley Hembrough (Teddy) and Audrey Wardell (Jason); and his nephew Jared Smock.

Memorials are suggested to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
