He was predeceased by: his parents, Franklin Thurston and Erma Thurston (Barton); and his brother Ernest "Porky" Blakey. He is survived by: his wife Joyce K. Goembel; and his children, LuAnn DeGrave (Dan), Deb Carlson (Vern), Frank Thurston (Colleen) and Jennifer Miller (Chuck).
