He was predeceased by: his parents, Lyle Shimer and Arline Shimer; his wife Elizabeth Shimer; his sister Rena Crawford; and his parents-in-law, Julius "Doc" and Lena Gramlich.

He is survived by: his sons, Daniel Shimer (Kathy) of DuBois, IL and Mark Shimer (Laurie) of Alhambra, IL; his grandchildren, Wendi Zobrist (Tyson), Kara Gall (Phillip), Cody Shimer (Amber), Colten Shimer (Brianne), Ethan Shimer and Jared Shimer (Breanna); his great grandchildren, Adilyn, Ryder, Hayden, Jamison, Willa, Hollynn and Lincoln; his stepgrandchildren, Zoe Dachroeden (Adam) and Levi Hueter (Claire); and his stepgreat-grandchildren, Emmie and Elowyn. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
