He was predeceased by: his parents, Francis Matern and Katherine Matern (Knittle); his brother Gary Matern; his parents-in-law, Jack Beverlin and Helen Beverlin; his brother-in-law Rick Parker; and his nephew Brian Buckley.

He is survived by: his wife Pamala Matern of Herscher; his daughters-in-law, Steven, Janet Matern of Odell, Andrew Matern of Reno, NV, Darrin and Brittany Matern of Bradley; his grandchildren, Brandon, Jacob, Abby, Colton and Saydee; and his brothers-in-law, Tom Buckley, Mary Ann and Dan Senesac.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice of Kankakee Valley.
