He was predeceased by: his parents, Walter H. Matthews and Beatrice Matthews (Durbin); his son-in-law Richard Westbrook; his grandchildren, Bonnie Matthews and Daniel Matthews; his sister Sandra "Honey" McDonald; his siblings-in-law, Bill Ruppel, Mary Jo Matthews and Norma Matthews; and his niece Christy Ruppel Grob.
He is survived by: his children, Tanis Westbrook of Carbondale, Kevin Matthews of Carbondale and Jeffrey Matthews of Makanda; his grandsons, Jayson Matthews, David Matthews, Oliver Matthews, Reuben Matthews, Jon Matthews and Christopher Matthews; and his brother Robert Matthews of Tacoma, WA. He is also survived by four great grandchildren; seven great-great grandchildren.
