He was predeceased by: his father Ralph Mertes; and his stepson Michael Davis. He is survived by: his mother Elsie Mertes; his wife Deborah Watson; his son Richard Mertes of Chillicothe; his stepchildren, Melissa Jury (Paul) of Henry, Rebecca Lester (Jarrod) of Henry, Chris Schaffner (Trudy) of Delevan and Scott Schaffner (Elizabeth) of Clinton; his stepgrandchildren, Dalton, Alannah, Brendan Lester, Aubrey Harris, Blake, Charley Grace, Chloe, Claire, Jake, Noah, McKenzie and Andrew Schaffner; his stepgreat-granddaughter Willow; his siblings, Dennis Mertes (Grace) of Gardner, Karen Schmitt of Lostant, Susie Brandner (Kevin) of Lostant and Daniel Mertes (Danelle) of Lostant; his mother-in-law Ruth Ann Salisbury of Metamora; and his siblings-in-law, Kathy Hagerstrom (Steve) of Sparland, Randy Salisbury (Denise) of Sparland and Chuck Salisbury (Cindy) of Henry. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews and great-nieces and nephews.
