He was loved and cherished by many people including: his parents, Herman Esselman and Florence Esselman (Holste); his wife Barbara Hall of Havana; his daughter Vicki Carr (Joe) of Fairfield, Iowa; his grandchildren, Katelyn Steele (Brian) of Overland Park, Kansas and Matthew Carr of Des Moines, Iowa; his great grandchildren, Graham and Brooke Steele; his siblings, Nelson Esselman and Margaret Trimpe of Havana; his cousin Carol Kolves of Bath; and his sisters-in-law, Mary Stanfill of Columbus, Georgia and Leona Bradley of Havana. He was also cherished by several nieces and nephews.
Memorial contributions may be made to St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Havana or the Havana Public Library.
