Gus" Kostandinos Alexander Petropoulos, 88 of Gurnee Il., loving husband of Beverly (DeVon) Petropoulos, entered into eternal rest on Tuesday morning, March 27, 2018. Gus was born on September 1st, 1929 in Chicago, Illinois, the son of Alexander and Sophia (Dracopoulos) Petropoulos. After graduating Waukegan High School in 1947, he served in the United States Army during the Korean War from 1948 until 1955. Gus had an entrepreneurial spirit, and became a prominent local businessman and owner of Petropoulos Brothers Appliances, Inc. for 55 years. He and brother Nick Petropoulos were pioneers in marketing and providing an amazing "customer experience". The store not only served the home appliance needs of the community, but became a destination of events and celebration in the area. They sponsored turkey giveaways during Thanksgiving, prominent sports figures from the Chicago Blackhawks and Chicago Bears, and family fun events throughout the year. His willingness to help others was encapsulated by graciously volunteering his time to support the community. He served on the Village of Gurnee Planning Commission, and as a Board Trustee for nearly 20 years, providing leadership and guidance in the early development of the Gurnee community. Gus also served on the Victory Memorial Hospital Board of Directors, and as a Hospital Foundation Trustee for over 20 years. He loved deep sea fishing and golf especially with best friend Paul Adams (Adrian and children Alex and Michael), was member of Glen Flora Country Club, and served as club President. The 18th hole at Glen Flora clearly his favorite, as that is where he posted a hole in one, 3 separate times. Although active and prominent in the community, his priority and true passion was his family. Gus is survived by "his beautiful bride" Beverly, three children, Kimberli Ray (Stacy & Anthony Ray-Duty and Rick & Kari Ray) and Mark Stephens, Tom and Erin Beck (Jordan, Kelly, and Kyle), and Sophia J. and Ismael Rosa (Dino, Madeleine, and Myles), sister-in-law Tess Petropoulos, nieces and nephews Stacy & Hercules Dellas, Sophia and Tony Grassa (Sam & Michael), Tony and Becky Petropoulos (Stephanie and Nicholas), great grandchildren Josalyn & Jaalen Ray, Janai Ray-Duty, and Alyssa, Ashley, and Allison Ray. Gus was preceded in death by brother Nick Petropoulos, sister Margaret Dellas (Alexander Dellas), nephew Alex Petropoulos, and father-in-law Albert DeVon (Virginia DeVon). Relatives and friends may join the family on Friday March 30th, for visitation starting at 9:30am and service at 11:30am, at St. Demetrious Greek Orthodox Church, 1400 N. O'Plaine Road, Libertyville, IL. Followed by a Military burial service at North Shore Garden of Memories, North Chicago, IL. At 1:00pm. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Demetrious Greek Orthodox Church, Libertyville, IL., in the name of Gus Petropoulos. For funeral info: 847-336-0127.
