Dr. Murphy was named one of Chicago's Ten Outstanding Young Men in 1961 by the Chicago Jr. Chamber of Commerce, and he was selected to be a Fellow of the IEEE in 1967 in recognition of his contributions to education and research in the field of automatic control.
