He was predeceased by: his wife Lois R. Schmit; and his parents, Albert Schmit and Frances Schmit. He is survived by: his children, Jean Spagnoli (Michael), Susan Vanderkelen (Daniel) and John Schmit (Judith); his grandchildren, Anthony, Caroline, Nicholas and Elizabeth; his great grandchild Claire; his siblings, John E. Schmit and Caroline E. Schmit; and his close friend Gloria Moschel.
