He was predeceased by: his parents, Albert Nicolai and Hildur Nicolai (Ager); and his sister Marilyn Reinart. He is survived by: his wife Barbara Nicolai (Slayton); his children, Adam and Morgan Nicolai of Glendale Heights; his grandsons, Xander and Max Nicolai of Lombard, IL; and his brother Richard Nicolai (Sherene) of Oconomowoc, WI. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
