With heavy hearts, we announce the death of James Kerns of Glen Ellyn, Illinois, born in Mitchell, South Dakota, who passed away on September 5, 2020 at the age of 99. Family and friends are welcome to leave their condolences on this memorial page and share them with the family.

He was loved and cherished by many people including: his wife Gretchen; his children, James (Kathleen), Shawn (Maureen) and Kevin (Cary); his grandchildren, Colleen, Meghan Janikowski (Brock), Hillary, Kristine Norton (Thomas), Shawn Jr., James II and Erin; his sister-in-law Virginia Kerns; and his parents, Stephen I. Kerns and Ethel Kerns (Hoadley). He was also cherished by numerous nieces and nephews.

Jim and Gretchen were a great support to me in my music career, and were part of a group of beautiful people who came to see Jim Beebe's Chicago Jazz nearly every weekend of the year for 14 years. I feel so blessed that the Kerns were a part of my life; with only fond memories of them and some joyous times together. RIP Jim; and hugs to Gretchen. xo”
