He is survived by: his wife Grace Ottwein (Schmidt); his sister Audrey Deeren of Troy, IL; his children, Ann Culp (Michael) of Edwardsville, IL, Amy Zagar (Keith) of Southlake, TX, Paul Ottwein (Amber) of Edwardsville, IL and Emily Ottwein of Edwardsville, IL; his great grandchildren, John Ottwein and Nicole DeVerter-Ottwein of Nashville, TN; his grandchildren, Adam, Jessica Ottwein (Annabelle) of Edwardsville, IL, Tyler Ottwein, Emma Pieper of Edwardsville, IL, Dakota Roper (Tyler Orgler) of Edwardsville, IL, Richard, Laura Leh (Devyn) of Edwardsville, IL, Matthew, Catherine Zagar (Jane) of Dallas, TX, Patrick Zagar of Dallas, TX, Benjamin Ottwein of Edwardsville, IL, Bethany, Eric Paulsen (Emmet) of New Orleans, LA, Megan Culp, Nathan and Pamela Culp (Clayton); and his pet Victoria Culp (Brentleigh) of Lillington, NC. He is also survived by many cousins, nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Hawthorne Animal Hospital Angel Fund; Partners for Pets; or Shriner's Children's-St. Louis.

“I will always remember Merrill's singing, & his lovely voice, how he interacted with all of his children, how he enjoyed talking to people about many things, & his wonderful smile & my parents enjoyed going out & having fun. Merrill sang, in choir with our family & he had such a bombing voice that would just fill the church, he is now singing again with my parents in heaven, he will be miss by all who knew him, he was a great man, with a great voice. Love you Merrill, will never forget you”
