He was predeceased by: his wife Linda Atherton; and his siblings, Lloyd Atherton and Sandra Mosman. He is survived by: his children, Cindy Watson, Tina Atherton Maxey, Gene Atherton, Jr. and Jimmy "Bo" Atherton.

In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to the Faith United Methodist Church, 325 S. Stott St., Genoa, IL. 60135 in care of the Slater-Butala Funeral Home, 132 W. Main, St., Genoa, IL. 60135.
