He was predeceased by: his parents, Dr. Winston Hull and Naomi Eshleman (Knight); and his brother Douglas. He is survived by: his wife Cathy Lynn Vail; his children, Gary Vail Jr. of Alexis, IL and Rebecca Price (Scott) of Galesburg; his grandchild Morgan Vail of Monmouth; his great grandchildren, Maya and Everly; his nephew Dan Eshleman (Bethany) of Temecula, CA; and his cousins, Anne, Mark Rasor of San Jose, CA, Bob and Pam Johnston of Tucson, AZ..
Visitation was held on Tuesday, January 14th 2025 from 12:30 PM to 2:00 PM at the McGuire & Davies Funeral Home and Crematory (1007 North G Street, Monmouth, IL 61462-1187). A graveside service was held on Tuesday, January 14th 2025 at 2:30 PM at the Hope Cemetery- Warren County (2907 170th St, Galesburg, IL 61401).
John's contributions to Precision Teaching were formally recognized in 2023 when he received the prestigious Ogden R. Lindsley Lifetime Achievement Award from the Standard Celeration Society.
