He was predeceased by: his wife Joann D. Kern. He is survived by: his children, Nanette Rieso (Denny), Russell Jr. Kern (Julie), Charlotte McDonald (Thomas), Dana Matchett (Ramon) and Donna Kern (Rick); his grandchildren, Amy Tidwell (Mark), Laura Beatty (Eric), Thomas McDonald (Rachael), Maggie Matchett, Samantha Matchett, Jamie Kern (Corey), Jordan Kern, Joey Kern and Sara Kern; and his great grandchildren, Madelyn, Audrey McDonald, Emma Beatty and Harper McDonald.
