He was loved and cherished by many people including: his parents, John R. Harpst and Eileen Harpst (Shea); his wife Donna Johnson (Jeanie); his children, Ronda Sumner (Steve) of Kankakee and Dan Harpst (Steph) of Decatur; his grandchildren, Jordan Harpst (Lisa), Garrett Harpst, Cameron Harpst, Rachel Sumner and Carly Sumner; his siblings, Tom Harpst (Martha) of Mahomet and Tara Nichols (Ken) of Mahomet; and his sister-in-law Kathy Harpst of Champaign. He was also cherished by 3 nephews.

Memorials can be made to Cornbelt Fire Protection District, Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church, or Mills Breast Cancer Institute at Carle Foundation Hospital.
