He was predeceased by: his wife Jeanette W. Houpt; his children, James R. Houpt Sr. and Jennifer M. Fietsam; his parents, James E. and Bebie; and his siblings, E. M. "Buddy" Houpt D. Earl and Katherine "Sug" Thomas Emma Dee.
He is survived by: his son Jonathan Houpt (Jessica) of Buford, GA; and his grandchildren, Dr. James R. Houpt Jr. (Diana), Alexander J. Highley Makenzie M., Fietsam Cameron S. Fietsam Logan and Houpt Hunter D. Houpt.
