He was predeceased by: his parents, Alfred Bachtold and Dorothy Wiegand Bachtold; and his half-sister Joyce Schroeder. He is survived by: his wife Mary Wenger; his children, Marsha Lanz (Mike), Forrest, Melodee Rabe (Adrian), Ted Bachtold (Teresa), Paula Kelson (Nate), Kristi Strahm (Clinton) of Bern, KS, Brenda Bachtold and Kurt Bachtold of Lacrosse, IN; and his sisters, Bernice Zeigler (Tim) of Springfield, MO and Doris Roberts (David).

The family suggests memorials be given to Fairview Haven Retirement Community, Fairbury.
