He was predeceased by: his parents, Eleanor Dunning and Joseph Shallcross Lovering; his sibling Alis Lovering Fern; and also Amber Lynch. He is survived by: his wife Joan Murtaugh Lovering; his sibling Talbot Dunning Lovering; his children, Joseph Shallcross "Pete", Michael Scott and Hutchinson Clark; his stepchildren, Ann Lois Harriman and John Walter Harriman "Johnny"; his grandchildren, Jason Scott Lovering (Rebekah), Christopher Michael Lovering (Camille) and Ariel Edenixssa; and his great grandchildren, Bryson Christopher and Zander Michael Lovering.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Sam's name to The Evanston Lighthouse Rotary Club.
