He was predeceased by: his parents, David Carlson and Ragnhild "Rose" Carlson; his brothers, Loyal and Clifford; and his granddaughter Kellie Westermeier.

He is survived by: his wife Helyn Ann "Lynn" Carlson (Hojnacki); his children, Lynda Thorfinnson (Ross), David (Lori), Karyn Westermeier (Mike), Thomas of Elmhurst, Robert (Cathy) and Charles (Corinne); his grandchildren, Katie Eggers (Andrew), Stacy, Krista, Nina, Danny, Kristin Westermeier, Samuel, Emma, Ethan and Shannon; his great grandchild Madison Eggers; and his brother Robert.
