He was loved and cherished by many people including: his siblings, Colleen Quinn (Paul), Maura Schoo (Kerry) and Jim Barrett (Mary); his nieces and nephews, Patrick, Kevin, Conor Quinn, Maeve, Claire Schoo, Brendan and Jack Barrett; and his parents, Mary Ann Barrett and John T. "Jack" Barrett.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in John's name to the Illinois Park and Recreation Foundation's student scholarship fund.
