He was predeceased by: his parents, Herbert Nelson and Narlene Nelson (Gloria Barnes); his children, Willie B Nelson Jr. and Vicki Nelson-Miller; his brother Herbert Nelson Jr.; and his daughter-in-law Jo Ann Nelson.
He is survived by: his wife Betty; his daughter Lavonda Denise Nelson; his grandchildren, Robert Taylor (Butch) of Atlanta, GA, Marsha Raglin (Floyd), Rebecca Tolbert (Ronald), Cheri Clark, Lou, Lloyd Mickles, Lavonda Renee Mickles, Willie B Nelson III, Brit Ta Nae Nelson, Tourrie, Courrie Frazier and Jacolby Sims; his daughter Marquitta Nelson; his grandchildren, Jimaul Lockett, Angela Lockett and Tiana Griggs-Anderson; and his brother Jasper Nelson. He is also survived by nieces, nephews, cousin, and friends.
He was one of the founders of the American Cancer Society, Relay for Life of East St. Louis, where he worked diligently to raise money for those affected by cancer. In 1991, he served on the board of directors for Southern Illinois Healthcare Foundation and was elected Chairman of the board of directors.
