He was predeceased by: his mother Lois Nelson (Firch). He is survived by: his father Virgil Nelson; his brother Greg Nelson (Barb) of Geneseo; his nephew Jeff Nelson (Christine) of Moline; and his niece Kim Gehling (Nick) of Geneseo. He is also survived by five great-nephews.
