He was predeceased by: his parents, William Appel and Myrtle Appel (Williams); his wife Phyllis Schreck; his sons-in-law, Wesley Matter and Steve Evans; and his siblings, Julene Knouse and William Appel Jr..
He is survived by: his children, Janet Matter, Patsy Holland, William "Bill" Appel (Mary) and Roger Appel (Wendy); and his sister Wilma Jean Schubert. He is also survived by 7 grandchildren; several great grandchildren.
