He was loved and cherished by many people including: his parents, Michael H. Cavanaugh and Elsie J. Cavanaugh; his wife Martha Burtschi; and his children, Catherine Cavanaugh of Decatur, David Cavanaugh (Stacy) of Monroe, WI, Judith Clark (Michael) and Mark Cavanaugh (Kelly) of Bloomington. He was also cherished by 13 grandchildren.
