He was predeceased by: his parents, Vestle R. McElyea and Patricia McElyea (Guffey); and his brothers, Calvin and Joey McElyea. He is survived by: his wife Jackie McElyea; his children, Donnie McElyea (Scottina) and Dawn Dummer (Blake); his grandchildren, Isaiah, Kyle and Aida; and his sisters, Debra Beal (Paul), Brenda Lawrence (George) and Patty Robins (Matt). He is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the family.
