He was predeceased by: his parents, Adolf J. Metzger and Martha Metzger (Wegehaupt); his wife Betty J. Bunger; his son Larry Metzger; and his siblings, Ewald, Nestor, Reinhard, Walter Metzger, Fritz, William, Herman Bialas, Martha, Bertha Bialas, Hanna Metzger Schaver and Ruth Schnuckel.
He is survived by: his children, Linda Cagle of Rochelle, Lee Metzger (Mary) of Rochelle, Merle Metzger (Sue) of Rochelle, Mark Metzger (Diane) of Rochelle, Mick Metzger (Mary Beth) of Davis Junction, IL and Tom Metzger (Amy) of Rochelle; his sister Olga Howard of Aurora; his sister-in-law Mary Bunger of Sheboygan Falls, WI; and his grandchildren, Rhonda Crandall (Kevin) of Rochelle, Jennifer Cagle of Rochelle, Steve Cagle (Sarah) of DeKalb, IL, Jeff Metzger of Rochelle, Brad Metzger (Erin) of Rochelle, Bryan Metzger (Taryn Brooks) of Chana, IL, Will Metzger of Davis Junction, IL, Mike Metzger (Michelle) of Rochelle, Sarah Fitzgerald (J. C.) of Lovington, IL, Scott Metzger (Margaret) of River Forest, IL, Bridget Schwebke (Chad) of Whitefish Bay, WI, Shanna Metzger of Denver, CO, Trent Metzger (Kayla) of Rochelle, Emily Metzger (Josh Weber) of Champaign, IL, Brett Metzger (Jennifer) of Rochelle, Elijah and Abby Metzger of Rochelle. He is also survived by twenty-seven great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to St. Paul Lutheran Church or School.
