He was predeceased by : his parents, William Jr. Kern and Bernadine Kern (Grebner); his grandson Travis Kern; his great grandchild Tebel Kern; and his siblings, John, Jim Kern and Donna Graff.

He is survived by : his children, Terry Kern (Sheri) of Danvers, Todd Pittenger (Nanette) of Grand Terrace, Mike Kern (Pamela) of Congerville and Heather Kern-Scott (Chris) of Hudson, Illinois; his grandchildren, Tyler Kern (Amelia), Sam Cleaver (Kenzie), Mitch Cleaver (Ahna), Nicholas Pittenger, Taylor Henry (Caleb), Nathan Pittenger, Allison Shirk (Jonathan), Amanda Young (Stan) and Zachary Campbell; his great grandchildren, Turner, Talon, Thatcher Kern, Topher, Aurora, Treeland, Tyson, Aeryts Kern, Peyton Cleaver, Harlan Shirk, Lexi and Levi Young; and his brothers, Mike Kern of Washington, Doug Kern (Connie) of Tremont and Keith Kern (Jeff Roscow) of Marion, Illinois..
